The Affordable Care Act was an ambitious piece of legislation that was in no uncertain ways mutilated.
Since the inception, loopholes have allowed companies a way out of providing needed benefits for their staff. Further more, the previous administration aimed to harm Americans by taking out needed provisions in the bill. The result? American Insurance Companies profited. American's themselves, furthered their medical debt.
There's 3 areas of Health Care that I believe need to be on the front of everyones mind.
1.) Affordability.
2.) Mental Health Care.
3.) Prescription drugs.
Medicare for All is inevitable. We need a low cost and strong level of Health Care for the American Public that provides a base level of care for all American Citizens. That the simplest explication. I believe we should have private industry healthcare that works with corporations and the direct public to ensure that we stay competitive and provide the absolute best care. However, without a Medicare for All program, healthcare will forever be about chasing a profit not providing care. If the pandemic was an awakening, we have fallen on our ability to be ready for a medical disaster and it comes on the idea that profits are king.
In truth, we need to seriously look at how hospital operate and how they are maintained, and cap many surgery and visit costs for all on important care. We need to tackle the lack of clinics and strengthen the relationship with communities and doctors.
Mental Health has become the leading cause of death in young adults and
teenagers. We need to provide more support in schools for mental health resources, coping, and beyond. The notion of "We didn't have that" needs to be set aside, and the focus should be completely on the person at hand. Depression and Anxiety have amplified as internet, social media, and schools have evolved. We owe it to each other to make sure resources beyond a hotline are readily available. Including more access for our Veterans to mental health resources. We also need to activate quicker in our schools to help control violent outbursts. Instill mental health checks in more high-stress jobs, and provide a path to services that is greater than the network already in place. With our Mental Health goal we must also ban the use of Conversion Therapy on individuals under the age of 25 to ensure that they are safely allowed to grow and make their own decisions instead of being forced.
While I could talk about the two previous topics at length, I believe it's important to note
that Drug costs are only sky rocketing. However, the dosage cost constantly go down. There is without a doubt a heavy expense to create a life saving medication. However, initial cost to develop the medication is roughly 3 billion dollars. Companies will talk about failed drug prices as well, resulting in a number close to 20 billion to market a new drug. If America collectively took one pill a day for 5 years of the new "20 billion" drug it would cost .03/pill. The truth is with name brand drugs, companies profit from these developments. We need to focus on lessening the cost to consumers. Taking a look at patent laws in this area and making sure that life saving drugs such as insulin are capped at a price that's affordable.
