Minimum Sentencing
- The act of minimum sentencing requirements have lead to high disparity on sentences despite the guidelines they set. It's imperative that we set the tables right. Items that should carry minimum sentencing should be crimes like sexual assault. Minimum sentencing should not be used to punish BIPOC communities on drug charges.
- Non-Violent crimes also should carry a Maximum sentence that is predetermined, as cases grow by the year that charge the BIPOC communities with great disparity to the white population.
Unconscious Bias / Brutality
- The police system is inherently flawed. We have the opportunity to spend money in our communities to do something about it. The investment in more peace officers, adequate mental health care, non-bias training, and the mandatory practice of body cams will help.
- The United States needs a law to protect citizens in the guise of the truth. Meaning Mandatory Body Cams and the absolute legal authority to bare first or second witness through a recording device. There is no reason that officers should be free to act on the premise that something will go unseen.
For Profit Prison Systems
- The for-profit prison system is designed to work on lowering the cost of labor. With an estimated 25% of the worlds population incarcerated in an American prison, we see states sign agreements with a guaranteed 90% occupancy.
- These systems are not regulated and often see inmates have less access to meals as a cost saving measure.
- Lastly, The Corrections Corporation of America has seen its profits rise nearly 500% since 2000. While the inmates have gone to about half the populations of its prisons serving time on drug charges.
No Knock Warrants
- No-Knock Warrants have lead to a new style of execution that is legal. It's highly unlikely that the government should ever need to act on this style of warrant in every day circumstances. There should be a law enacted that sets the purview that No Knock Warrants only be executed on repeat violent offenders, not average and likely harmless Americans.
Non-Violent Traffic Stops
- We have the ability to stop the illegal search practice that is aimed and targeted towards low-income families. Too often cars with simple violations such as "tint" or a tail light being out, are then escalated to a search in hopes to find something else.
- Traffic violations that are non-violent should be a ticket and mail it. Non-Violent offenses result in a ticket in which can be paid online, challenged, or result in further action if not resolved. They shouldn't be seen as a method to stop an automobile.
